Tragic Loss of a Young Tourist in Puerto Rico’s La Perla
A trip to Puerto Rico, meant to be a joyous celebration of Bad Bunny’s concert residency, turned into a heartbreaking tragedy early Sunday when Kevin Mares, a 25-year-old tourist from New York, was fatally shot. Police identified Mr. Mares as the victim of an incident that unfolded in La Perla, a vibrant community near Old San Juan with a rich and complex history.
Mr. Mares traveled with three friends from New York specifically to attend one of Bad Bunny’s 30 highly anticipated concerts at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan. These shows, part of the “No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí” series, have attracted tens of thousands of visitors, significantly boosting local tourism.
Shooting Incident and Immediate Aftermath
The shooting incident occurred around 4:13 a.m. at a place called “Refuge for Mistreated Men” within La Perla. Authorities have confirmed that Kevin Mares was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of an altercation between several individuals nearby. Detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz, leading the investigation, stated that during the argument, shots were fired, hitting at least three people, including Mr. Mares, who was struck in the left abdomen and rushed to Rio Piedras Medical Center, Puerto Rico’s largest public hospital, where he tragically passed away from his injuries.
Aside from Mr. Mares, a brother and sister, both in their mid-40s and residents of La Perla, were also injured in the shooting and are currently hospitalized, though their conditions have not been released by officials. Investigators did manage to recover a magazine that might belong to the weapon used, but notably, no shell casings were found at the scene, adding to the puzzling nature of the event.

Investigation Progress and Legal Context
Sgt. Ruiz highlighted the significant obstacles investigators face, admitting that they have very little information about the incident at this time. The exact cause of the argument that escalated to violence remains unknown, and the shooter is still at large, prompting a call for public assistance. In an effort to shed light on this unfortunate event, San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero plans to release surveillance footage from the area, hoping to uncover crucial leads and piece together the events that led to this sad outcome.
Adding another layer of concern, the shooting occurred during hours when San Juan’s municipal regulations strictly prohibit alcohol sales. According to the city’s code, businesses can only serve or sell alcohol between 6 a.m. and 1 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and until 2 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays. This detail might be important in understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether any local laws were breached that night.
Remembering Kevin Mares: A Life of Promise
Beyond the tragic event, Kevin Mares was a young man full of promise. His family shared on a GoFundMe page that he balanced two part-time jobs while pursuing his dream of becoming a veterinarian. His mother, Sandra Mares, expressed deep sorrow on social media: “Unfortunately he was not able to complete his dream.
Loved ones described Mr. Mares as “a deeply loved son, devoted friend, and a source of inspiration to everyone who knew him.” The GoFundMe page highlighted his kindness, adventurous spirit, and strong commitment to family. His girlfriend of six years, Angy Nicole Arguello, who he planned to propose to in the fall, and his 15-year-old brother are among those mourning his loss. Ms. Arguello posted emotional tributes online, writing, “I love you, my angel,” and “My love, I love you. I miss you so much. Why, God, did you take him away from me?”

La Perla: A Community of Contrasts
La Perla is a seaside neighborhood recognized for its vibrant colors and scenic views but also for its troubled past. Historically, it was known as Puerto Rico’s largest heroin distribution point and was associated with high crime rates. The area’s reputation once discouraged visitors, with signs warning outsiders to stay away.
Efforts to improve La Perla’s safety gained momentum following a major federal raid in 2011, leading to multiple arrests including a prominent community leader. The community’s image received a boost from its prominent feature in the 2017 global hit music video “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, which showcased its lively character and unique architecture. This exposure contributed to a perception of La Perla as safer and more welcoming, drawing more tourists.
Despite progress, isolated incidents continue to highlight ongoing risks. In February 2023, three tourists were stabbed after being told to stop filming in the area. In April 2024, a 24-year-old tourist from Delaware was killed and his body set on fire following an incident related to a drug purchase. These events underscore the challenges in maintaining safety amid the neighborhood’s efforts to shed its difficult history.
Broader Context and Continuing Investigation
Puerto Rico, with a population of 3.2 million, has reported 277 killings so far this year, a decline compared to 325 during the same period last year. While this suggests a modest decrease in violent crime overall, tragedies like Mr. Mares’ death remain deeply impactful.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the argument and the shooter’s identity. Mr. Mares’ family is working with officials to repatriate his body to Queens for funeral arrangements. The loss serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable dangers present even in culturally vibrant locations.
La Perla’s residents and leaders face the delicate task of balancing tourism growth with community safety and managing perceptions shaped by its past. This ongoing effort reflects the broader challenge faced by many neighborhoods striving for renewal while confronting persistent social issues.

Kevin Mares’ passing deeply affects both his family in New York and the Puerto Rican community. As the investigation progresses, his life and dreams stand as a testament to the personal costs of violence and the importance of justice and peace. The incident calls attention to the complex relationship between popular cultural events and urban safety, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and community support.
